A space heater in North Carolina caught fire and burned down a family’s home.

The fire occurred late Tuesday night when an unattended space heater caught fire and quickly spread to a bed. From the bed, the fire quickly spread to the rest of the home. At the time of the fire, a mother and her son were in the house. Neither was hurt in the fire however all of their possessions are gone.

The fire department arrived at the scene quickly. They noted that every year furnaces, space heaters, fireplaces, and Christmas trees start numerous fires. The heating implements cause problems when people attempt to ward off winter’s chill.

December and January are the two busiest months for firefighters across the country. Firefighters are expecting an increase in the number of house fires this year as more people turn to their wood-burning fireplaces for heat in an effort to save money on electricity and gas.

Two-way radios designed and marketed for children have been recalled due to a burn risk. The toys were sold at Toys R Us in August and September of 2008.

The burn risk from the toys involves the rechargeable batteries that have been prone to leak battery acid. The walkie-talkie type radios were produced in China for Cobra Electronics of Chicago, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The batteries are standard AAA nikle metal hydride battery cells that are in a black wraper. The dangerous batteries have “300 mah (CEL)” and the date code “TF” or “RF” printed on them. The radios recalled are made of pink plastic and come in a purpe package. These radios have the product number PR191-2VP. This number can be found on the package and in the battery compartment.

A new study from the University of Chicago shows that microwave ovens pose a signigicant burn risk to small children.

A study of burn and scald injuries in children under 5 shows that microwaved foods or liquids are the fourth most common cause of these injuries. The injuries are potentially so serious that some of the researchers on the study are urging microwave manufacturers to install locks on the microwaves to prevent children from opening the microwave once something has been heated.

So far, scald prevention efforts have focused on convincing parents to turn down the temperature on their water heaters so that water won’t be able to get above 120 degrees.

A fire in a kitchen in Leavenworth, Kansas has resulted in one person being taken to the hospital, according to the Fire Department’s spokesperson.

The fire occurred Sunday evening and was reported to the fire department around 8:30. When fire fighters arrived, the house’s two occupants were not home. There was some smoke coming out of the kitchen door. There were visible flames through the kitchen windows.

The fire was a result of a cooking fire that spread to cabinets located above the stove. The fire department is not sure what injury caused one of the occupants to be taken to the hospital. The other occupant refused treatment. The fire was extinguished with the help of one large fire extinguisher. The fire fighters then checked the rest of the home for any places to which the fire might have spread.
